How Technology has Changed the Face of Elections

Technology has revolutionized everything including elections. It has made our lives way easier and effective as compared to the old days where everything was offline. Most people in the current era rely on technology for almost everything and every decision they make. The era of smartphones, smart watch and laptops among many other gadgets helps as to easily access technology from wherever we are and there is easy flow of information. Technology has made elections fast and efficient. The old days involved a lot of printed media and physical campaigns, now everything has completely changed. The following are some of the ways technology has affected elections:

How Technology has Changed the Face of Elections

Campaigns online

In the old days campaigns were majorly offline and now it is both online and offline. With technology and by using the right strategy, you can reach people that you would not be able to reach while you were offline. Since most people rely on technology for their decision making, you would better have a good online campaign strategy.

Online voter registration

In the conventional way, voter registration involved going to a polling center and filling in some forms to register as a voter. Now everything has changed as you can register from anywhere all you need is internet connection and national identification details. This has helped in encouraging more people to register as voters.

Check in at polling centers

The old system involved physically walking into a polling station for checking in. With the current technology you can check in at your polling station without your physical presence. In some countries you can also do the voting online. You don’t have to physically go to a polling station to tick the ballot boxes in order to vote.

Online counts

With technology, you can stay up to date with the tallies online. Counting is purely done online which is faster and easier than in the conventional way which was a physical count and was more time consuming and expensive.

Electronically transmitting election results

With technology, the electoral body can electronically transmit results. This means by having internet connection and not necessarily TV or radio, you can be the first to know about the election results from wherever you are.

Conclusion

As much as technology has many positive effects, it has negative effects as well. For example the system may get hacked and lose all the data making the election void. It may also be a challenge in the sense that for those who cannot access internet connection may not be able to vote. Due to many users of the internet during voting, the internet may lag which may make some people not to be able to vote. Technology has changed the general face of election and it’s not only the national elections alone but also the council elections. With council elections, there are also council bodies and nonprofit organizations such as Philadelphia 3.0 that are working towards harmonizing elections and improving the electoral process for fair results.
